Singer confirmed for Larson's Battlestar movie

Yesterday, HitFix posted about the possibility of Bryan Singer getting signed on by Universal to direct the Battlestar Galactica feature film that producer and original series creator Gary Larson entered talks with the studio for earlier this year. Apparently today Variety confirmed from Universal that Singer is indeed going to direct the feature, and the next stage will be to find a writer.

Lots of questions are certainly going to get re-churned with this news, including what kind of effect if any a new-new take on Battlestar will mean for the recently finished RDM series and it's spawn in Caprica which airs January 2010.

The HitFix post has some great links to some of the original plans for a series reboot from Bryan Singer and Tom DesSanto, who cut the project just before starting it back in 2001. They also go back to Richard Hatch's attempt to do a reboot. All of these treasures can be found in the archives of BattlestarGalactica.com.

Personally, I have mixed feelings. There are rumors of grudges Gary Larson has toward the RDM "reimagined series", and I can't help but wonder if Larson is pushing for this in spite of Moore's version. At the same time, I think Bryan Singer is a good choice to handle the project, as long as they let a little more time go by and Singer is given some creative control. I wish Bryan Singer would rehash his Logan's Run reboot he teased about several years ago before BSG gets put in the blender again.

BSG reports from SDCC

Whew! A lot of the news is starting to pour in from the first two nights of SDCC which both featured BSG panels and events. Some video is starting to roll in too, and I'm hoping in the near future we'll find more complete video from the panel and concert on Thursday, as well as the panel from Friday.

First off, Thursday: July 23rd was considered SDCC's kick-off day, and there was a Battlestar Retrospective panel in the afternoon featuring Richard Hatch (host), producer Michael Taylor, science advisor Kevin Grazier, and composer Bear McCreary. There were surprise appearances by Tom DeSanto, who along with Bryan Singer helped start the process of "reimagining" BSG, and Luciano Carro also showed up. The panel opened with a video that looked back on the series featuring lots o' cast and crew (see the not so great video below), and the panel opened up for questions and comments (which are covered here by Livejournal user Averita - lot's of info on upcoming projects), and followed with signings. Sci-Fi School has a little coverage on the panel too, and they mention Nicki Clyne was there, but I think they confused her with Luciana (judging by the way it's written). Airlock Alpha reports that Taylor also dispelled a rumor about Katee Sackhoff having participated in Caprica (which I was unaware of anyway). Thanks to pedda from Livejournal's Battlestar Blog for supplying some links to info on this panel. Here's the video:

Bear and his orchestra performed at The SD House of Blues that evening, with a "Music of Battlestar Galactica" concert, which was MCed by Eddie Olmos. Luciana and Michael Hogan also showed up for the event, and apparently Katee Sackhoff briefly. Bear talks about it a little here at his blog, but we're hoping for some videos to start rolling in!

Friday July 24th was the big day. The "BSG panel" was actually a combined panel for The Plan and Caprica, and the big news is Eddie Olmos talking about how there are more BSG "telemovies" (a la Razor and The Plan) to come. Note: Comic-Con coverage should be expected to contain at least mild spoilers concerning Caprica and The Plan.

Check out Zap2it's live blog from the Friday panel, which pretty much transcribes most of the important stuff. Also...

Buddy TV sums up the high points

From SciFi Wire: SDCC: Ron Moore on why Caprica moves beyond Battlestar, and SDCC: Espenson on creating worlds in Caprica and The Plan

And it looks like it might well be worthwhile to get The Plan on Blu-ray (E! Online), according to what Eddie says. Hmmm, is it just for the video quality or will there really be more extra features and deleted scenes??

Here's video of Eddie talking at the panel:

And Katee Sackhoff was over at the 24 panel that night! Here's a clip:

... Oh, and we have a confirmed date for the premiere of Caprica on SyFy - January 22, 2010

BSG Panel at World Science Festival

We now have some coverage of the BSG Panel which took place at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan as part of The World Science Festival. The event was called Battlestar Galactica: Cyborgs on the Horizon (see link for list of participants, which included cast members Mike Hogan and Mary McDonnell), and the discussion revolved around just what the title suggests - What place will cybernetics have in our future? Here's a roundup:

Discover Magazine's online blog Science not Fiction summarizes some of the key points and comments by the panelists.

Sam J. Miller posted an even more in depth account at Galactica Sitrep.

... and here's io9's write up, which includes some ideo clips and a description of a clip from the upcoming movie The Plan which hasn't been aired to the public as of yet!

Tonight!

Okay, so this post actually mostly concerns any time after tonight...

Hulu has now posted on the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles page - "Availability Notes: TSCC returns to Hulu February 14", which means to me that they will have the season premiere available to view the day after it airs, or even at 2am (likewise with BSG). The official Fox site for TTSCC seems ready to go with their full episode page as well.

There still is no information about Dollhouse being posted to view online at either Hulu or the official site at Fox, but both sites seem well poised to do so. Hulu has gone through the trouble of making a page dedicated to Dollhouse with pretty much all available clips and previews posted there, and at the official Fox Dollhouse site they have a video/full episodes spot set up just for Dollhouse. The only thing that makes me worry is the fact that barely anything was available for the original airings of TTSCC way back over a year ago. But since then, online services have improved exponentially, even for Fox I might add, and it looks like all the shakes of the magic 8 ball are saying "more than likely" when we ask if our shows will post to the web.

BTW, it's definitely worth a gander at the Fox Dollhouse video/full episode page right now to see some great behind the scenes footage of the making of the show, with Joss, Tahmoh, and the rest of the cast.

As far as the BSG episode tonight is concerned, I have ceased to watch all previews and tried to remain spoiler free, except one little thing that I ended up seeing while browsing the news. I'll hold off on posting that one little thing until tomorrow, for the sake of the other spoiler virgins out there.

Another reminder to fans who can't catch these episodes as they air (or even if they can) - click over to the official sites and show support for the shows!

Something I just thought of that completely puts Friday nights over the edge for me is the fact that the animated Clone Wars episodes also air on Friday nights on The Cartoon Network. Not that I ever actually watch those on Friday nights, but still! Everyone seems to be gambling on the Geeks never going out on Friday nights. That would probably be the case for me if I didn't have to work. The Clone Wars can be viewed after Friday air times on both The Cartoon Network site, and the official Star Wars site.

To end this post - Friday night on Fox, Grindhouse style:

Aaron on 'Emissary'

Anyone lucky enough to attend New York Comic Con this Friday (February 6) might also be lucky enough to catch the Emissary panel, which is a new series Aaron Douglas is co-starring in. From Comic Book Resources:
"The panel takes place Friday, February 6th at 6pm and will include the first look at Emissary’s teaser footage and a Q&A with the stars... The Emissary cast includes Philip Morris (Smallville), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica), Brian Thompson (X-File, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Emmy nominee Thaao Penghlis with additional cast members Yuri Lowenthal and J LaRose in attendance at the NYCC panel."

Also in Aaron news - Here's some video of last Friday's "Geek Out With Wil Wheaton, Yuri Lowenthal, and Aaron Douglas" session at Phoenix Comic Con. I'll post video 1 of 4 here, and you can watch the remaining 3 either at the youtube user's page who posted them, Autolooper, or over at The Chief's Deck.

Aaron will also be attending The Dallas All-Con (March 13, 14, and 15) as a guest of The 501st Star Garrison, the Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas region branch of the 501st Legion. Aaron is not scheduled for any particular event at this con, but will probably be doing autographs as he pals around with the 501 SG. Will Aaron be in trooper gear? Battlestar Finale Special

From The Futon Critic:
""Battlestar Galactica" will wrap its four-season run on Friday, March 20 at 9:00/8:00c with a two-hour finale. As a build up to said event, look for the "Battlestar Galactica Finale Special" (working title) on Monday, March 16 at 10:00/9:00c. The one-hour special and the March 13 installment of the series will also replay on March 20 starting at 7:00/6:00c, leading into the two-hour finale."

Trail Mix

A mixed bag of goodies for the journey to 1/16. If anything, we have the time now to get creative with blog post themes. I picked out all the raisins for you...

It seems as though the BSG cast might as well start their own biker gang. We know Katee and Tricia enjoy their bikes, and last week Michael Trucco joined with a couple dozen other celebs for the 25th annual Love Ride, which raises money for Southern California charities. This year they won big for Muscular Distrophy. You can see Michael in a few shots by Simon Cherpitel around page 35 and 36.

tvshowsondvd.com gives us a sneak peek at the screen menus for the region 1 DVD release for season 4.0 on January 6. Hey, it's something!

Mary McDonnell's guest appearance on Grey's Anatomy will debut on Thursday, November 13 on ABC. Mary plays Virginia Dixon, a cardiac surgeon (Take that Cottle!). It's still not known how many episodes she'll be in for, as she is also in pre-production for the movie Jimmy Nolan. Spotted on bostonherald.com

Katee Sackhoff should be busy with the pilot for Dick Wolf/NBC's Lost and Found, and in the meantime we're still waiting on the episode of Law & Order where she'll guest star for an episode as a murder suspect. surprisingly, neither of these have shown up on her imdb page yet. A big recent release for Katee is the PS3 exclusive game Resistance 2, which hit stores last week. Katee voices Cassie Aklin who joins Nathan Hale in the resistance movement against the alien Chimera who have been slowly destroying the world. The game has already gotten high ratings, and I plan on picking this sucker up soon, but there are just way too many good new games out lately. Long before the release of the game, there was the Project Abraham viral site in which katee was featured in video clips that gave bits and pieces of the story. If you check the link, they've added new video since the game's release.

What the heck? Just in on the wire is news that Michael Trucco will also be appearing in an episode of Law & Order: SVU as a suspected baddy who slips drugs to the gals! The episode is due to air Dec. 9 (Why do we know this but still don't know when Katee will be on?).

For the sake of blogging...

This is where I throw everything together in one entry, for lack of a better way to do it. Included is an obligatory fangirl photo of Michael Trucco just for the heck of it. No, I don't have any new news on Michael (except that supposedly his sleeper-agentness will be dealt with in the upcoming prequel movie)...

Still finding some SDCC interviews out there that I hadnt caught before. Here's one with Jamie Bamber and Comic Mix.

If you weren't sure that it was officially official that we would be getting extended episodes in season 4.5, well here's the proof from TV Guide as confirmed by Sci Fi. It's still unknown as to how exactly it will be extended, and by how much.

I guess what's also official is that we will be getting two seperate DVD sets for season 4. One for season 4.0, and another sometime after the series ends for season 4.5. As much as I don't love buying more DVD sets, I don't mind if it means we get extended cuts and more bonus features. It will also make the DVD sets for season 2.0 and 2.5 not look so strange on the shelf between the chubbier complete seasons 1 and 3 DVD sets. Season 4.0 is set to be released on DVD this December. Thanks again TV Guide.

Ron Moore, along with several other industry professionals, will be having a panel discussion at The University of Southern California on September 10th. The discussion, titled In the Name of God: Terror, Torture, and Television is part of Live From L.A.: Good/God and Evil, "a series exploring the religious and ethical ramifications of 9/11 in broadcast television". See the USC announcement here. Admission is free. A plane ticket from the east coast and a hotel room unfortunately are not. Thanks for the heads-up Sitrep.

Last but not least, and certainly the most oddly interesting is that Tricia Helfer will be speaking at NVISION 08 on August 25th in San Jose. Tricia will discuss "how visual computing has affected the TV and film industries" (Neoseeker). How cool is it to hear that Tricia is doing this? Very, especially for this female blogger. We ain't no booth babes!

Battlestar Cast Roundup!

Now that the series is done with shooting, the cast of Battlestar Galactica is moving on to other projects. Here's a completely unofficial roundup (run down?) of what they'll be up to in the coming months (or have been up to), gathered from various sources and fan sites around the web. If you have any info or corrections to add, please mention it in the comments!

Eddie Olmos (Admiral William "Husker" Adama) recently finished some voice work for Beverly hills Chihuahua and will be supposedly directing the next Battlestar Galactica movie (according to Ron... or was it David?)!

Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin) will be starring in director Jeff McCracken's movie Jimmy Nolan about a family raising an autistic boy, due out in 2009.

Jamie Bamber (Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama) recently completed the horror sequel Pulse 2: Afterlife in which he stars. He will be directing 5 of the 10 upcoming Battlestar webisodes and is almost officially cast in the new Law & Order: London TV series.

James Callis (Doctor Gaius Baltar) will be directing the other 5 upcoming webisodes and has a hefty schedule of convention tours of which we hope his scheduling doesn't get mucked again. Other than that, we're waiting on news of what James is moving on to next. Will he break his Baltar typecast?

Tricia Helfer (Six) started up fresh with the second season of Burn Notice this month, and has recently been cast for the pilot of Fox's Inseperable as a police psychiatrist.

Grace Park (Boomer, Athena, etc.) has been working on the new series The Cleaner, which ran it's pilot on July 15. Good luck! A little FYI: Grace and Tricia Helfer both voiced characters for the recent EA video game release Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Sweet!

Katee Sackhoff (Captain Kara "Starbuck" Thrace) got a taste of video game fame with Halo 3, and has now been spotted at the new viral ARG sites for the game Resistance 2 known as 'Project Abraham'. Maybe she's found a new genre? We will still be able to get a Katee fix on TV this fall as she's slated for at least a few episodes of Nip/Tuck. She'll be playing a motorcycle riding anaesthesiologist, one of her actual favorite past-times (motorcycles, not anaesthesiology).

Michael Hogan (Colonel Saul Tigh) seems to keep a pretty low profile. Other than the BSG movie and perhaps the webisodes, you'll probably see Mike at conventions?

Aaron Douglas (Chief Galen Tyrol) is looking more like a budding film star. We'll see him in two new feature productions by the end of the year; the horror Blood: A Butcher's Tale, and the remake of sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. Aaron isn't abandoning TV completely though. He's currently in Toronto shooting a new pilot for a Canadian police drama tentatively titled The Bridge.

Tahmoh Penikett (Lt. Karl "Helo" Agathon) will be in Joss Whedon's upcoming TV series Dollhouse, and I think I speak for most of us that we are VERY excited about everything before the comma in this sentence. Also catch Tahmoh in the horror-comedy flick Trick 'r Treat out in 2009.

Allesandro Juliani (Lt. Felix Gaeta) will be in the romantic comedy Traveling which is now in post-production. Allesandro is a talented singer and also has done voice work for several anime productions. We're hoping he'll speak on the English dub of the Death Note movie!

Rekha Sharma (Tory Foster) is also in Traveling (see above for Allesandro), and has been making appearances at the conventions. Otherwise, no more projects on the slate for her.

Michael Trucco (Sam Anders) will be in the pilot TV series Man of Your Dreams due to air this fall. This fangirl really, really, really, really *kicks self* hopes to see even more of Michael in the future.

Kandyse McClure (Officer Anastasia Dualla) will appear in indy flick Cole, and production is wrapping up for The Disposables, in which she costars. Kandyse has also made appearances in the show Reaper this year.

Nicki Clyne (Crewman Specialist Cally Henderson) doesn't seem to have anything in production at the moment, but she's been somewhat active on the convention circuit, interviewing, and recently appeared as a guest host on the Canadian Hypaspace network for a weekly culture and entertainment segment.

Donnelly Rhodes (Doc Cottle) has made guest appearances in a plethora of TV shows, most recently in Smallville and The L Word. The latest movie he appears in is Riddle of the Sphinx, filmed largely in Canada.

Leah Cairns (Lt. Maragaret "Racetrack" Edmonson) is in the movie Helen (her character's name is Susanna), and has also been in the TV show Kyle XY. Rumor has it that our Racetrack is filming in Argentina as Queen Ma'at in Tales of an Ancient Empire, the prequel to The Sword and the Sorcerer.

Bodie Olmos (Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza) doesn't have anything in production at the moment, but he hung out at SDCC and surely we'll see him at more cons and just hanging out with dad.

Paul Campbell (Billy Keikeya) hasn't been seen as Billy for way too long! He may be the only cool thing about the new Knight Rider TV series aside from the car, where ironically his character is also named Billy. Paul stars in the romantic comedy Play the Game which finished production this year. He also starred in National Lampoon's Bag Boy which hit the festival circuit last year. I mention a 2007 movie because it looked hilarious and I love Billy! ... I mean Paul.

Luciana Carro (Captain Loanne "Kat" Katraine) has been working on several other projects since we last saw Kat, including Blades of Glory and Snowglobe. The action flick Fast Track is in post-production now.

Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek) is very active on the convention circuit, and he has two new sci-fi movies on the horizon; Starship II: Rendevouz with Ramses and InAlienable.

Jen Halley (Crewman Specialist and now nugget Diana Seelix) finished her first short film Sarah in the Dark, in which she wrote, directed, and costars.

Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh) has no new projects, but has shown up at some conventions and pokes in for an interview every now and then.

Callum Keith Rennie (Leoben Conoy) is in The X Files: I want to Believe, and has two more upcoming movie appearances; Case 39 and Of Murder and Memory.

Matthew Bennett (Aaron Doral) appears in a recent episode of Flashpoint and is currently filming for the movie Spectacular!.

Lucy Lawless (D'anna Biers aka "The Notorious 3"). Need I say more? I kid. She's got 2 movies coming up: Bedtime Stories and Bitch Slap. She voiced Wonder Woman (ah, if only they would cast her and make the live action movie!) in Justice League: The New Frontier. She recently came down from a ski trip in the mountains of NZ to make it to SDCC.

Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil) is appearing in Al's Beef and the upcoming The Dunwich Horror. Aside from his lengthy cast credits, Dean is also an accomplished and talented artist who continues to exhibit and even does album covers.

Tiffany Lyndall-Knight (The Hybrid) is in Case 39 along with Callum Rennie, and others from the Galctica cast (Must be an agency thing?). She is also in the recently completed movie Mothers & Daughters.

Lorena Gale (Elosha) is in the upcoming The Day the Earth Stood Still, as well as Traitor, The X-Files: I want to Believe, and the pilot episode of The Middleman.

Mark Sheppard (Romo Lampkin), who is incredible, has appeared in the TV show Shark, and will be appearing in an episode of the upcoming TV show The Middleman. No other projects seem to be on Mark's plate right now, but he is very active in the convention circuit, and we can be sure we'll see him do something brilliant in the near future.

Michelle Forbes (Admiral Helena Cain) made a stunning appearance in the first part of the most recent season finale of Lost. Since then, she has been in the recently completed French thriller Dorothy Mills. Other recent TV shows include In Treatment and Waking the Dead.

Sam Witwer (Crashdown) hasn't been seen on Battlestar since the early years, but I have to give him an honorable fangirl mention since he is the 'Secret Apprentice' for the huge new Star Wars video game franchise The Force Unleashed. Aside from promoting the new game, Sam has appeared in the TV shows CSI and Smallville most recently, and is in the movie Game which is still in post-production.

What about...

Stephanie Chavez-Jacobsen (Kendra Shaw from Razor) is cast for the proposed American remake of the British TV series Life on Mars. Stephanie has two movies in the works; Quantum Apocalypse and an untitled sci-fi horror directed by Jason Connery.

Nico Cortez (Young Bill "Husker" Adama from Razor) is one of those actors I've been trying to watch, but haven't seen any new productions of note from him since his Razor appearance. Hopefully we will!

- I know there are plenty of other cast members, but this is about all I could possibly handle for one post! Stay tuned for a directory of official and fan sites for the cast (and some crew!).

Michael Rymer takes on Witchblade

Rymer, who also directed the not-critically acclaimed (but I loved it!) Queen of the Damned, as well as a huge chunk of BSG episodes, has been signed on to direct the film adaptation of the comic book and short-lived TV series Witchblade. Should be interesting to see the progression! /film

Because we care...

Some odds and ends on Battlestar Galactica from around the web:

Because we care what The New York Times has to say, here's their April 4th prelude to season 4 -

Space Opera Returns: One Last Step for Mankind

Also, a BuddyTV write up on the Virtuality series that I didn't previously post. Be sure to link to the Hollywood Reporter article in there as well.

The rumor that wins the scariest yet potentially most fun award goes out to this proposed film trilogy:
Looking to develop its own homegrown franchises, Tom Cruise's United Artists banner is embarking on a space odyssey with Ronald D. Moore, the man behind Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica."
- from Yahoo news

Not much else going on at Ron Moore's blog except a podcast server issue roller coaster ride. As of April 24th, the podcasts are up (again) at scifi.com.

Last but not least, some clips from a documentary screened at the recent Bear McCreary concert "Music of BSG" in LA:

What concert you ask? Let James Callis tell you

... and he'll sing for you too. "Spooky"

Very cool BSG sounds with Raya. "Lords of Kobol"

It's almost here!

Friday night! If anyone hasn't had a chance to catch the specials aired on SciFi starting March 28th - Battlestar Galactica: Revisted and Battlestar Galactica: The Phenomenon, they have them up at scifi.com to view. Click here (this is the scifi.battlestar main page. If the video is no longer there, it can likely be found on SciFi Pulse here). Nice little tributes to the series. Beware of spoilers if you haven't seen up to season 3 so far.

Battlestar's Olmos OK If All Die

Edward James Olmos, who plays Adm. William Adama on SCI FI Channel's series Battlestar Galactica, told SCI FI Wire that it's not inconceivable that all of the characters will die by the end of the upcoming fourth and final season--and that would be OK with him.

Not that that is in any way a spoiler for the upcoming season. But Olmos said it would be fitting for a show that he called a "commentary on our times" and the "most worthwhile piece of television" he has ever done.

"Basically, if it’s true to form, no one makes it," Olmos said in an interview at SCI FI's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York earlier this month.

Producers have been tight-lipped about their plans for the show's climax and dénouement, though it's believed that the fourth season will take up the sudden reappearance of Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) and her revelation that she's been to Earth. Meanwhile, four people must deal with the sudden knowledge that they are Cylons.

If everyone were to die? "I think that people would be shocked, and they'd be hurt, and they would be totally, totally frustrated," Olmos said. "But I've got to tell you, that's a truth that people have to realize. We may do it to ourselves [in real life]. It all depends on us now and what choices we make." Battlestar Galactica will kick off its fourth season on April 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with the episode "He That Believeth in Me." --Ian Spelling

Battlestar News!

I've been off for awhile, and now that I'm back there's all sorts of juicy new BSG devlopments, so I'll cram 'em all in this entry...

Ron Moore recently did a very interesting interactive interview with EW, which gives away some tidbits, or very mild spoilers, about season 4 with a very nifty photo of the crew staged as The Last Supper. Click here for the fun, and take note of item 10 - the empty seat. A lot of people have been taking this empty seat and Moore's comment about it to mean that everyone who is present in the picture is not the final unknown Cylon. I don't know though. I think you could take Ron's comment as a non-answer either way. There are a few important characters not present. If it's true that the final Cylon is not present, I'm banking on Gaeta. I'd like to see him be the mastermind behind it all. Perhaps the Cylon clone of the head honcho scientist who created the Cylons in the first place. I guess we'll just have to see now, won't we? *The picture below is not interactive. See above link for the clicky awesomeness*

I haven't been able to find a direct source link for this, but apparently TV Guide let out that NBCU has SciFi looking at Caprica as an option pretty seriously (again). For this we can thank the WGA strike for causing a shortage of material. They have been sniffing at Caprica since before the strike officially started, along with discussions as to whether they will split season 4 or not. Click here for a recap

Today The Futon Critic reports that Sci Fi is planning to present two half hour Battlestar Galactica specials, which look to be similar to "The Story So Far" offering they dished out way back during the season 2 hiatus (or was it between 2 and 3?). Or, I wonder if it will simply be a collection of some of the bonus materials from the Razor DVD and other interviews and clips (as seen in next section). Unfortunately, these specials are slated for March, which is merely the month before season 4 is set to premiere. Ah well, I guess it's almost February and we're in the final stretch.

Here are some clips and spoilers from season 4, thanks to io9.com and the Canadian show Hypaspace. I have the feeling some of these clips might be integrated in the above mentioned specials, and I'm not quite sure if they were part of the Razor DVD bonus material (I got mine from Best Buy, which supposedly had exclusive bonus material). I lent it out, so I'll have to wait to check on that.

Over at sfcrowsnest.com, there's some insider rumors/spoilers about the Earth issue in BSG's season 4. Don't click if you don't want to be potentially spoiled!

Season 4 is set to premiere Friday, April 4 at 10pm BTW!

Battlestar may indeed air on NBC

Long time no blog! Just heard about an IGN article rehashing the possibility that NBC may opt to air episodes of Battlestar Galactica while the strike plods on.

Battlestar Galactica May Re-Air on NBC

- IGN December 6, Eric Goldman
"Rumors of Galactica re-airing or even moving new episodes to NBC go back much further than the strike and seem to pop up once a year or so. NBC has in fact re-aired select Galactica episodes in the past, but never on a regular basis. While it's highly unlikely first run episodes will be moving to NBC -- the show's fourth and final season is set to premiere in the spring on SCI FI, though production on the second half is suspended thanks to the strike -- the rumors of ongoing reruns on NBC have resurfaced recently, as the networks run out of scripted series to air and a greater possibility looms of them looking to cable programming that would be new to a larger audience."

While I was browsing IGN, I saw this link to a whole buncha BSG videos. Might be fun to check out if you have the time.

In other non-news... I just picked up Razor on DVD. Yeah, I caved. I had these thoughts of boycotting the DVD release - I think partially because of the strike, and partially because I thought it might make a statement against the delayed release of season 3 on DVD and the pushing back of season 4, but truthfully I can't remember exactly why I was planning the boycott anymore. I just had to see the extended and unrated edition that "you couldn't see on TV". I picked it up at Best Buy and it says it has an exclsive Bonus Disc only available at Best Buy. Hmmmm. Kind of doubt that. I'll post about the DVD later, as I'm just about to settle in to watch it tonight.

10.26.2007

Season 4 set to air in April 2008

In (season 3 spoilers in link!) an LA Times article yesterday, we got a confirmation that season 4 will not air until early April, 2008. The length of any seasonal gap is still unknown, and everything seems to be subject to the looming WGA strike.

Which isn't all bad. Thanks to that and the potential lack of material which would result, NBC is planning on airing older Battlestar episodes.

Oh yeah, and Moore will direct an episode. I care a little less about this. While it will be interesting to see, the show has still become what it is without Moore directing.

Of course, still not even a peep about season 3 on DVD, but I would expect it to be as late as a couple of weeks before season 4 begins, since they've done that with previous Battlestar DVD releases. Thanks Universal. You've made the decision to engage in illegal downloads a no-brainer to the majority of fans.

Battlestar Galactica this week...

Not too much for news, save for a semi-juicy recent interview with RDM:

First Look: Battlestar Galactica Razor

'we also do things like flash back to the original Cylon wars 40 years ago. We see a young [William] Adama [who will be played by a younger actor, not Edward James Olmos] fighting in a Viper. We move around quite a bit in the chronology of the series.'' Although that chronology won't include any sort of resolution to the season 3 cliffhanger, Moore does guarantee that ''there are some things that happen in Razor that set up things in the fourth season.''
...

Oh, and Moore says that, yes, he does know who the final unknown Cylon is; yes, whoever is playing that character knows he or she has been anointed; but no, they haven't shot the reveal yet (it will most likely be in the second half of the season).

:O

(heh heh - I posted this in the sw.com Cantina BSG thread, and the yodacon transferred ;)

~Also... a recent post on BuddyTV talks about the economic influences regarding the possible season 4 split and makes it sound like the Caprica series is indeed a real possibility:

"The network is hoping to reach a final decision by January. One of the key factors is figuring out which new shows will be well-suited to accompany Battlestar Galactica, and how much those shows will cost.

One of the shows being considered is the Caprica spin-off series. Network executives believe the spin-off may help retain and expand the loyal Battlestar Galactica fan base, and are even considering a two-hour pilot similar to that of Razor. Should the pilot perform poorly, it will subsequently be sold as a DVD to make up for the losses. On the other hand, should the pilot do well, the network will have a new series to serve up."

~Trekkies and RDM fans will appreciate the appearances by Major/Colonel Kira Nerys aka Nana Visitor in an episode of season 4 of BSG. TrekWeb.com

~ Battlestar Galactica got some mention in this New York Times article:

"Science fiction is one thing: “Battlestar Galactica” has intellectual cachet.

“The humans are pagan polytheists and the robots are monotheists, whose divine jihad is against the humans (even though the former know that the latter created them),” Anthony Gottlieb, the author of “The Dream of Reason: A History of Philosophy from the Greeks to the Renaissance,” explained off the top of his Blackberry from an airport baggage claim..."

~ Still no new peeps about season 3 on DVD. Looks like everything is on hold until they figure out all the politics over at Sciffy *sighs* (but tell me that picture of Katee Sackhoff doesn't totally rock!)

Season 4 sit-rep

Some news is starting to trickle in from the Battlestar Galactica panel at Dragon-Con, and some really ominous rumours to boot. Word has it that Jamie Bamber and Aaron Douglas had a little roast at the expense of Sci Fi Channel politics, and supposedly "joked" that season 4 was to be split into two stints of ten episodes each, the first half being aired in February 2008, and the second the following February. I've checked around some of the forums and it seems that this truly is a false alarm by attendees of the panel who accepted Bamber and Douglas's gesture as a joke. Many others are skeptical. It's not like we haven't heard "slips" from the actors before that were later confirmed as truth. Nor is it so far fetched to believe the Sci Fi channel would do this, since the second season of BSG was similarly split along with other scheduling catastrophes for other programs.

Rumor catches on at Buddy TV

The fan-world goes nuts, and is undecided as to the validity

Frown not fans. Here's a wonderful thing that came from Dragoncon: An interview with Jamie Bamber. Some great words in there!

Other recent S4 stuffs:

In the span of a week, we thought Kevin Smith was going to guest-direct an episode of BSG in season 4, but it looks like that's a no-go. I stated my feelings on this previously, and I really have respect for Kevin Smith in his own right. He actually, and very humbly, describes in his own blog what happened, and the reasons why he was hesitant himself are exactly the reasons I was hesitant to be enthusiastic about the prospect of a Smith directed BSG episode.

In the meantime, I'm sitting on my hands until an official statement is made concerning the season 4 split.

A month later... News!

Well, not too much has happened in BSG world in the last month, since they're busy MAKING IT!

One cool thing is that the new comic series Battlestar Galactica Season Zero has hit comic shops, which I wasn't expecting until later this fall. I follow some comics nowadays still, but only moderately. The premise and setting of BSG Season Zero does spark my interest though. Set two years before the events of the miniseries, Galactica's crew sets off on it's first mission together. I think I remember Tigh mentioning in season 2 somewhere that Sharon came on to the scene just about then as a nugget.

I don' know how much this will set continuity in motion, especially concerning the possibility of a Caprica series, which supposedly was planned to take place a full generation before the current BSG. I'm still very intrigued about this time frame as it pertains to the characters we know from the show. I might pick up issue #1, or at least flip through it (or wait for TPB). Can't get enough of BSG!

There's a few write ups with sample pages for the first issue in the following links:

The same creators of Season Zero are also putting out a one shot issue of Pegasus just in time for the air date of Razor.
...

- In other news, Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of BSG s4. *yawns* You know? I used to be entertained by Kevin Smith, maybe even a bit inspired. But now. Meh. Maybe I'm just jealous, but as the above linked article kind of points out - I don't really wan to see Kevin Smith style mixed with my BSG. I just don't.

- The first season of BSG is going to HD DVD, but not Blu-Ray. Yeah, I don't really care either. I don't have an HD res TV yet anyway, and when I do, I'm not re-buying all 4 seasons (plus Razor?). Upconverting works fine for me :)

- And last but not least... some more promising news - Moore closed a deal with Universal Media which could allow him to continue working with Battlestar (so sez that article), among other projects. Maybe all our Caprica series dreams will come true!

Still no news on the release of season 3 on DVD :(

Mini-sodes: Prelude to Razor

Remember the webisodes from right before season 3? (If you don't or haven't gotten to that point yet, I'll post them here at some point soon). Well, something similar is coming up...

SciFi recently announced:

In anticipation of the premiere of the two-hour event, Battlestar Galactica: Razor, the SCI FI Channel will whet viewers' appetites with an eight-week series of exclusive 2-3 minute "mini-sodes." Premiering in October on SCI FI during primetime, these promotional shorts will lead into the November 24 premiere of "Razor"... ... the mini-sodes will be included in the unrated Universal Home Video release of "Razor." They will also be available on SCIFI.COM after their on-air debuts.
